What is the purpose of small groups?
Trinity's small groups are designed to help you:
- Connect with others: Humans are created with a need for community, and Christians are created to live together in the community of faith. Small groups provide an opportunity to build deep relationships through which we become more devoted followers of Jesus. Small groups also provide a connecting place for new attenders and for friends and neighbors who are not connected to a church.
- Study the Bible: The Scriptures are God’s revelation to us so that we may become his people equipped for his mission (2 Timothy 3:16-17). We read the Bible in community so that we may sharpen each other and encourage each other to live as disciples of Jesus obedient to God’s Word. Each week, we study the sermon text for the upcoming Sunday so that God’s Word can speak to us in multiple venues. We wrestle through the text together in small groups, hear the Word proclaimed on Sunday morning, and continue to discuss implications for life.
- Become transformed: Our small groups are designed to be a vehicle for God’s work of making us his transformed, holy people. As we connect with others and study the Bible together, the Gospel of Jesus Christ changes us. We become disciples of Jesus, those who love and follow him with their whole lives. Small group leaders and members are transformed, which begins to transform the church, which begins to transform the community as God’s kingdom expands.
- Engage in the mission: Mission statements are mere words until something happens! The mission of the church is to make disciples, and small groups organize us to carry out that mission. As we become transformed people (disciples) by connecting with each other and studying the Bible together, we will see our place in God’s mission (making disciples). We are not content to stay within the walls of the church, because we want all people everywhere to hear the good news of Jesus Christ so that God’s kingdom may expand for his glory.
What do small groups do?
In a typical small group, people meet together in homes once per week, getting to know each other better, praying for each other, and studying Scripture together. Our small groups are currently studying the sermon text for the upcoming Sunday in preparation for hearing God’s Word.
